Contextual Linking: The Black Hat Way

In October this year a lot of hue and cry was raised over Google heavily penalizing sites which indulged in selling links, some justified and some unjustified. Page ranks took a bad fall and many were crying ‘Foul’. However the lesson to be learnt is that for all the malpractices one tries to employ, Google comes up with something that is one up .The ‘Page Rank massacre’ should come as a strict warning to all those who were indulging in black hat practices. The lesson for search marketers is that the process of getting relevant contextual links might be long but quality always pays.

Let us have a look into the kind of black hat practices that are taking place in obtaining 'contextual links'.

  • Building multiple websites:
Many SEM companies take this way out to provide quality back links to customers. There are those who create 2-3 good content sites and link them back to a primary site. The focus is to gain a better page rank for the primary site and that is exactly one need to differ. Is your focus the end user or simply a top ranking? Many of the companies which focus on a top listing tend to lose track of the end user and hence the contextual relevance to the end user. They end up creating 'information' sites with no relevance to the user, Then there are those SEM/SEO companies which provide packages for creation of contextual links. They have a database of multiple sites and based on the genre under which your site falls, they provide a contextual link on one of their sites.
Again the issue remains the same. You may drive up your page rank but it is no way going to drive user traffic for a long time.
  • Link Farms:
These emerged when webmasters realized that all major search engines were looking at the number of incoming links to a website. Pages were set up overnight which contained only links in a desperate bid to be on top in SERPs. Webmasters could pay for links posted on these links However; the search engines also became smarter and began to look at the quality of the incoming links as well. As such entire pages with a multitude of links on them were taken off Google's index. There were cases where entire domains were penalized for this practice. Also many of the webmasters started creating content filled pages on different categories and stuffed them with links. These so called Contextual pages could be deep within a site's directory. As such it is of no use to the end user and to you as well
  • Buying Blog Reviews:
Many companies pay bloggers to write reviews on their product/service. The review provides an effective back link to your site through an anchor text .This practice becomes a black hat technique when the review is not honest and the only motive is to generate back links and rake in moolah from unsuspecting subscribers
  • Buying links:
This is a widespread practice that many SEO/SEM firms employ to boost rankings. Many websites have sprung up which offer to place contextual links on their web site or on third party websites. Many SEM/SEO firms have created online marketplaces where you can buy/sell or barter contextual links. This seemed to be working for many sites till the time Google suddenly started penalizing sites which sold links, rendering incoming links from these sites useless.

Off the lot, blog reviews can actually work to your advantage if used in the right essence. A good review on your product/service on a blog serves as a good back link to your site. Many bloggers pick these links from other blogs and post them on other blogs as well, thereby increasing the number of back links. There are forum/message boards which offer comprehensive reviews on products/services. These provide quality back links to your site and drive traffic as well. Good reviews also lead to increased book marking/tagging thereby driving traffic.
